Fall colors are appearing. They sweep their way down the mountainside, as if the sun somehow set the trees alight with its red, gold and copper tones. People are donning their flannels and cinnamon and nutmeg are grated over our morning beverages. Asters and mums are out on porches and there seems to be a communal sigh of relief amongst farmers that the heat of summer is over— although the work still goes on.
A friend told me that fall is the season of letting go. Of not worrying over expectations and judgement and just enjoying the moments; the warmth while it lasts and the flowers while they still bloom. If you can’t bear to part with the flowers, take a wreath making class with Spring Creek Blooms or Harmony Harvest Farms so that you can enjoy their beauty all winter long.
Sometimes letting go means putting the to-do list and yard work aside and just getting out to enjoy yourself. Roanoke’s Annual Go Outside Festival is next weekend, with a plethora of activities. Watch a birding or fishing demonstration, enter a contest, or enjoy a bike tour of the Grandin Farmers Market.
This market weekend may be your last to enjoy summer vegetables, as a frost is predicted for much of the region. If you’re unsure how to utilize those remaining eggplants, peppers and maybe even a tomato or two, we’ve got you covered with 3 easy recipes to make your Sunday extra cozy. 🍂
