Charlottesville Nominated as Wine Region of the Year!
September Events | Apple Brown Betty | Cool down with a cocktail
An exciting prelude to Virginia Wine Month; this week brought the news that the Charlottesville Area and Monticello AVA is one of five nominees selected by Wine Enthusiast as Wine Region of the Year. Though it’s no great secret amongst Virginians that we have some of the best wine in the country, this evening we’re lifting a glass to all the winemakers, harvesters, tasting room staff, wine reps and distributors who help tell the story of time and place through each sip.
Have we tempted you to seek out some local wine this weekend? Check out the Monticello Wine Trail to plan your next winery weekend.

WHAT WE’RE BAKING: APPLE BROWN BETTY
September always marks apple season for this former New York resident and with our busy schedules, I don’t always have time to bake a pie. Enter this recipe from a past fall issue. An apple brown betty falls somewhere between a pie and crumble/crisp. Local apples are baked with sweetened bread crumbs for an ooey-gooey, warm-your-soul dessert (note: this recipe is equally delicious served with mug of steaming coffee at breakfast).
Unlike a crisp, the breadcrumbs are both folded in with the tart Pippin apple mixture and scattered on top to form a crispy topping. Serve this Virginian fall classic with vanilla ice cream, lemon whipped cream, or, with a very large spoon.
Find the recipe here.
