April 22nd is a very special day for us. Not only is it Earth Day, but it’s the day that Route 11 Chips was founded. Happy 33rd Birthday to us, and happy Earth Day to you!
Our entire purpose for existing is to create the world’s best potato chip. Even after a third of a century, while other snack companies have aimed for profits and explosive growth, we’re still small potatoes … and we like it that way! Our small batch, slow, kettle cooked process creates an unbeatable crunch that just can’t be achieved by mass production.
But we’re about more than elevating America’s favorite snack food to an art form. We’re also about sustainability, and we have been since we were founded on this important holiday in 1992.
We’ve gotten as close as we can (so far!) to a zero-waste chip-making process… while helping out some friendly, neighboring organizations along the way. Want to learn all the ways we are recycling, reusing, designing for efficiency, and reducing waste? Read on.
But our favorite way to show you how much we care about the environment and making a truly exceptional potato chip is for you to come visit us in the Shenandoah Valley. Our visitor center is full of big windows into our kitchen, seasoning room, and bagging area where you can safely watch nearly the entire process of making our chips. We’ll even offer you a talking tour to explain every step. It’s a fun experience, plus a great education for anyone curious about how much care and attention goes into making truly good food.
Maybe best of all, it’s free to come visit our factory. It’s free for us to talk to you or your group about the process. And while you’re here, it’s free to sample any or all of our flavors!
We’re welcomed school groups, extended families, small circles of absolutely dazzling friends, business and civic organizations, RV groups, motorcycle groups… you name it! The love of the potato is a universal force, and we’re here for it!
We do recommend you check our cooking schedule on Facebook or call us at 540-477-9664 to make sure you plan your visit for a time when we will be in production.
We hope for a chance to welcome you and yours soon. Come visit! And crunch on!
