National Seed Swap Day is tomorrow! What’s a seed swap? It’s a chance for growers to gather and exchange seeds, learn about new varieties, protect biodiversity and share knowledge.
In the last 150 years, the world has lost 75% of its edible plant varieties. By saving and exchanging heirloom and open-pollinated seeds, we can have a healthier, stronger food system. A network of growers is vital to support a more stable system and that’s why we are asking you to join us tomorrow.
We’re thrilled to partner with Seed Savers Exchange — a non-profit that preserves heirloom plants through seed libraries, regeneration, distribution, and seed exchange— to host our first seed swap!
On Saturday, from 2-4pm at Golden Cactus Brewing in Roanoke, we will be set up with seeds donated by Seed Savers Exchange, envelopes to pack your seeds in, and information about how to join Seed Savers network of gardeners. Our local partners, LEAP, Blue Ridge Hydroponics and Star City Compost will be set up with information about community gardens, soil amendments, and seed trays and starter soils.
Don’t have seeds to swap? That’s ok! This event is open to all who are interested in gardening this spring.
Can’t make it tomorrow? Check out our events listing of exchanges happening across the state. Our region is also host to many seed libraries, often residing in our public library system. To learn more about seed libraries and to find one near you, follow this link.
